"We want to make films that encourage the viewer to volunteer, implore them to take risks and encourage them to be active."
My name is Darrell Johnston. I was born and raised in Southern Iowa. Growing up in the poorest county in the state gives a person a perspective and appreciation for hard work and motivation. Two weeks after graduating high school I boarded a plane to Australia. Travel became intoxicating and since that trip I have experienced London, Canada, Eastern Europe and Asia. Most of those trips have been with a mindset of giving back. Some through Christian organizations promoting cleanup and building projects, others simply with the hope of impacting a life and leaving the place better than when I found it. When my partner Josiah and I were debating potential adventures, we knew that it should have an aspect of danger and humanitarianism. Due to the potential for human contact and the trust is takes to be at the mercy of strangers, hitchhiking was the perfect marriage between the two. During one conversation, we talked about how we had both been burned by travel buddies in the past. How a friend will talk about wanting to have an adventure only to back out at the last minute. It was then that we decided to block off the month of June for our month long hitchhiking adventure.
