My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

I recently discovered that my home does not have to be married to a location, rather a feeling - of belonging, of happiness, of wellness - and this is a feeling that I get from people. In all of my travels I have never found myself alone. People are everywhere and they have the power to share emotion and build community. Armed with my camera, I have attempted to capture the places that I have visited through the eyes of the people around me who have helped me to create an impression and a memory of these places. The images that follow illustrate my experience in Barcelona, Spain.
The first photograph included in the series depicts a street performer on the famous Las Ramblas in the act of lighting a cigarette. While I marvel at the complexity of her costume, she bows her head to light up and suddenly this magical angel reveals the fatigued woman whose shoulders must be aching underneath so much weight.
The second photograph shows a market vendor at La Boqueria. Normally bustling with activity, here there is a reprieve before the next wave of tourists swells and the young man snaps into action.
The third photograph reveals the true feelings of three children dragging themselves through the Teatro-Museo Dali in Figueres, Spain. Perched beneath this masterpiece, the children seemed to add to the surreal element at work in this masterpiece of a museum.
These photographs help to remind me of what I saw in Barcelona and how I felt there. The addition of a human element to these photographs makes my own memories so much more tangible. It is almost as if my memory is having a conversation with the photograph; I am able to live in the moment again and revisit this location by channeling its human emotion.
