Daniu's Journal Le sage est celui qui s'étonne de tout – Andre Gide

A Late Start

INDIA | Sunday, 4 May 2008 | Views [329]

For too many reasons to begin with this journal has started late.  Now hopefully i will became more disciplined and keep it updated.  A lot has happened in the past two weeks while I've been travelling.  I would like to go over it all and explain everything in detail but alas my memory will probably let me down, so I'll try and fill it up as much as possible and try and give some sense by following the photos.  At the moment I am in Nepal, in Kathmandu.  I have travelled from Delhi, India and covered some ground in Nepal.

Following the photos:

India, Delhi: Stayed with some wonderful ppl.  Luca and Polly and to this I must thank Tom!

Delhi was a shock, as expected and forewarned.  The shock was rather delayed in a sense.  It didn't hit me until I sat down and began thinking about it.

How should I describe Delhi.. I think what justifies Delhi the most is its INTENSITY.  There is an overtly diversity between the poor and the rich. It ranges from ppl in staying in massive hotel with swimming pools, room service, a la carte meals and continues service by staff in all kinds of uniforms.  AL the lawns are cut to precision by a man (again with a his own specific uniform) walking around with a pair of sissors cutting each leaf and twig.  The flip side to this is right outside the walls is a child in rags clutching to the bearing of his/hers dilapidated shirt.  A mother clinging tightly to the her infant who's grasping for pockets of air caught in the middle of the intensely polluted streets of Delhi.  I think this was the main part of Delhi that will stick to me like glue.

The driving in Delhi to some extent reflects the characters that I observed there.  Each car, bike, bicycle and rickshaw  pushes and shoves it way through any hole or crack that exists or in some case which don't seem to exist but are created by sheer force.  The ppl to some extent seem to have a similar approach, they are full on and are always out for to find a hole or crack in your wallet and are very persuasive in creating a hole in your wallet.

Delhi posses incredible beauty; palaces, temples, mosques... One can sit and envisage these places as sets to a Disney film or a fairy tale.  But when you exit these places you are suddenly hit with the harsh realities of Delhi.

This is to no means say that Delhi is not a very nice place, that is by no means what I found, as you maybe able to sees from the photos there is a lot to say about Delhi a lot which is also positive.  I suppose Delhi being first stop is a bit INTENSE but it was colorful place with a lot life although certain things about Delhi I am finding hard to shake off.

I will let the photos explain the rest.
