Flew down to Nha Trang from Da Nang in a little ATR-72 turbo-prop. Initially I was concerned about taking the flight because I didn't want to miss all the scenery I would see from the train. Fortunately it was a clear day and the plane hugged the cost all the way. The view was great, golden sand bay after golden sand bay, occasionaly we flew over mountains and jungle/forest. The flight was 1h 20m instead of 9 hours on the train, not bad for $42 US / 21 GBP !
Nha Trang's airport has actually been moved out of the city centre and is now about 35km from the city in Cam Ranh, near Cam Ranh bay. Cam Ranh bay was one of the largest US military ports in the war; in the 1980's the USSR built a millitary base there.
I took the bus to the city centre ( 25k VND - $1.50 ).
The hotel looks out over a road straight onto the beach, the horizon on either side and to the back is mountains.
First impressions are that Nha Trang is definately a beach resort town.
Not sure what I will do tonight, I'l see what Lonely Planet recommends.
