A dead barn owl is inspected by farmer Bob Woody, intrigued by its beauty. Life in the desert can be unforgiving and severe.

Gabriel, an undocumented immigrant farm worker eats breakfast at a bakery in a small town in New Mexico. He used to visit his family in Mexico regularly, but afraid of permanent deportation he hasn't made the trip in years.

The cracked soil of this pecan farm is sucked dry by both sun and root. Drought levels in New Mexico are now at the worst levels since record keeping started 118 years ago.
