My scholarship 2012 entry: Wellington: A Seaside City

I am a twenty-six year old in Wellington, New Zealand. Until six years ago I had barely taken a photo. While studying a degree in international politics and history, I became enamoured with the ability of the photojournalism images I was viewing to tell a story – a personal view of a place and time which could create an immediate emotional response.
In the six years as I’ve taught myself, I’ve never deviated from that original idea of what photographs could mean to those viewing them. I view photography as both a border-less language to communicate with others, and a personal view of a single moment -with all the feeling and wonder that it can entail.
In the past two years the development of my photography has really increased. After receiving the major youth awards in New Zealand I won the amateur-dominated National Photojournalism Prize and will soon open a third solo exhibition of street-style images. I love the non-stop learning process of photography, the constantly changing human theatre and the need to approach a subject without pre-conceptions.
This prize would be of huge meaning to me – a way to see the world and a chance to communicate a meaningful view of it to others.
