My Scholarship entry - Going Solo
Solomon Islands | Wednesday, July 3, 2013 | 5 photos
Hi my name is Marcus Crook, Growing up, I was always interested in drawing and art; I always found myself drawing faces and people. This has recently flowed onto photography as I find it very natural and comfortable to photograph people of all ages, capturing real and genuine emotions and embracing culture and traditions. My work tends to stray away from mainstream media and into communities and projects that need more awareness. Steve McCurry's famous photo of the young green-eyed Afghan girl featured on the front page of National Geographic depicts a love for people and culture. McCurry's love for telling an individual's story through a snapshot of their face is very inspiring for me. Constantly putting himself on the frontline is something I dream of. In october last year and visited South America where i was volunteering in Rio for the best part of 4 months. But it was the remote coastal villages of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on my way home that took my breath away. As a result, i was able (after gaining permission) to take some photos and use that work for the funding of local education with the Longgu Kaoka Association through an exhibition and Photobook.thks4urtym
