The Human Interruption

Kenya - The Human Interruption

Kenya | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

Visiting Kenya fulfilled a lifelong dream of mine. However, although it was incredible to see these animals in their natural environment and make eye contact with them, I realized that we are still interrupting them by being there. These photos serve to display the juxtaposition of human elements against the animal world.

(Wasn't sure if my essay went through so it is going in here just in case)

I feel naked without a camera. Having traveled as a tennis player representing Australia from a young age, photographs documented my memories, but evolved into capturing windows into foreign worlds: people, cultures and landscapes, creating one ‘big picture’ for me…perspective.
This exposure developed my compassion and opened my eyes, inspiring my photos and desire to travel. The better I become at capturing moments, the better storyteller I can be by sharing these perspectives with those unable to do so first-hand.
My roots are in Sydney, Australia, but I just graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in broadcast journalism while playing college tennis. This summer, I backpacked alone through Europe and visited Kenya, traveling without tennis racquets for the first time in my life! It was the happiest I’ve ever been. My company was my journal, talking to locals and of course, my camera.
I am gregarious and love nothing more than being ‘on the road.’ I’m fit, unflinching with hard work and a sponge for learning. It would be an absolute honor to be mentored by Jason Edwards. Who better to open my mind (and my lens aperture) than a National Geographic photographer?
