My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited - East Kimberley, Western Australia

Australia | Monday, December 17, 2012 | 5 photos

Working in Aboriginal employment I am fortunate to be welcomed into communities where people have resilience to improve themselves despite significant disadvantage, and to photograph moments of community’s stories. Now I want to help build capacity to shoot their own story. By 1st being a mentee I will add more value as mentor. I want to empower Aboriginal youth through photography to tell their story and to gift confidence through ability to do so. Stories are key to culture & photography is a world voice. I want to learn in order to be better equipped to express the reason I press the shutter myself. Landscapes are my comfort zone and in some ways they are the easiest photos but also only 1 part of any story. I want to improve in new arenas that require more awareness and sensitivity. My inspiration to start this journey was a 3-day opportunity in the Kimberley as volunteer photographer for a not-for-profit that facilitate secondment opportunities for Corporate Australia’s employees into host Aboriginal organisations for skills sharing and capacity building. Thrown outside my comfort zone technically & personally I see that through challenge I will truly be able to develop my own style.
