So after a breif trip to Chiang Mai to pick up Joe and run a hash, we are now in Chiang Rai on our way to Laos. Chiang Rai is boring. It took us a really long time to find a restaurant to eat in and there is not much going on. Luckily, our guest house was really nice and the owners were nicer. It's called Baan Bua and it is tucked away in a little corner off one of the main streets. We had a wonderful breakfast in the garden there this morning before stopping here, at the internet cafe, to check out travel warnings for Laos.
Going back to the hash... well, hashes are always an experience! The Saturday evening hashes are for women as well as men. I was afraid I might not be able to do a hash if you remember from my previous entry. That's only on Mondays. The hash here isn't a whole lot different from those in the states. We ran through the rice paddies and mountains outside Chiang Mai. The view from the top of the mountain was absolutely gorgeous! The circle at the end lasted for a little longer than usual and Joe and I both got really wet from beer that we had dumped on us and from the big chunk of ice that they make you sit on! (a big difference from what I'm used to) As newcomers and visitors, Joe had to drink a beer while his arm was in a long pipe, making it impossible to bend his elbow and actually get any beer in his mouth. They made me do the plank, which consists of one long board with three cups nailed on top. They had the two tallest guys stand next to me on either side and we all had to try to drink at the same time. Needless to say, I did not get much beer in my mouth either. Those were only two of the many beers we had to chug and opportunities we had to freeze our asses off on the block of ice.
Unfortunately, there were two newcomers who did not quite understand the concept of the Hash House Harriers and were offended by the dirty jokes and offensive behaviour. They both got too drunk and the man tried starting fights with everyone. On the way home, after hearing way too much of his yelling from the back seat and understanding that Joe very may well get knocked in the head for sitting near him, the driver of our car dropped him and his wife off on the side of the road to find their own way home. After that, things resumed as usual and we went to the H3 Pub to have some drinks and hang out with the cool, true hashers. :)
