Moving Across Islands with the Storm

PHILIPPINES | Thursday, 1 September 2011 | Views [413]

Batanes Group of Islands is one of the most majestic yet hard to reach places in the Philippines. It is located farther north of Luzon, one of the three major Islands in the Philippines. Because of its location (its approximately 190km south of Taiwan), it somehow has four seasons which is not normally experienced in the rest of the country.

The landscape of Batanes is what most tourists, especially photography enthusiasts go for. It basically has everything: the mountain ranges for trekking, the pure white sand beaches to get yourself a tan and most of all, the unpredictable weather that can get you stranded for days. Yup, it has everything that my friends from college after 6 months of planning decided to fly to the island along with a typhoon. Ofcourse, how can we miss the opportunity of being in an island that will be under the eye of the storm? For a bunch of 'theoretically inclined' friends who doesnt have a... uh, rockstar life after college, it seems a grand adventure that the thrill of getting stranded incase we land safely seems too exciting to miss. Some, who didnt have latin honours, just refused to be called an insecure chicken for the remaining years of existence that the classic excuse of peer pressure seems acceptable.

Essentially, the 6-month planning entailed 4 days and 3 nights. Each day, we're suppose to 'hop' from 1 island to the other, giving us around 2-3 islands to visit. In retrospect, it was pretty decent if there wasnt a storm. But then, life just have to be exciting that we ended up 5 days and 4 nights with 2 islands to visit, approximately 2 days under the eye of the storm and a goat on a native tree.
