My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

USA | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

I have always been fascinated by the cultures of different societies and the commonalities I might share with them. Through travel photography I want to better understand the people and places that make up this diverse world. The Armchair Traveler has been learning about the world through publications like National Geographic since the late 1800’s. It is because many people don't have the means to travel to unfamiliar places that travel photographers hold a crucial role in educating such individuals about other cultures. Unfortunately, photography has not always been a sincere platform for illustrating the traditions of various cultures. It is my desire to learn how one can use photography to portray cultures in a respectful manner. Under the mentorship of Jason Edwards, I believe I can learn how to photograph cultures with integrity while maintaining a keen eye for detail and composition. Photographs have always had the ability to move me and I wish to captivate others through the stories I will tell with photography. As a student of both photography and anthropology, this unique experience will allow me to grow both as a photographer and a person.
