Barcelona on Strike

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Spain | Sunday, October 10, 2010 | flickr photos

This small story took place on september 29 in Barcelona,Spain. As soon as you stepped on the street you felt the tension everywhere. Burning bins and garbage all around the city. Signs of violence everywhere.
As I followed the main round down into the center we saw more and more people with catalan flags discussing what happened. Shops, bars and restaurants closed, for they were scared that people would come in and trash their establishment as it happend during the whole day in the center. Broken shopwindows, banks covered in spraypaint and garbage, policecars burning.
People with angry faces, swearing about the police and their inappropriate ways to handle situations like this.
Then a loud sudden noise of exploding (what i think) firecrackers made everybody aware that it wasn´t over yet. We were forced to run a few times so we wouldn´t get involved in the violent attempt of people showing what they wanted and police trying to control the situation.

I´m a photographer and recently graduaded from a 3 years course of photography in Barcelona.
I was born in what today is Serbia with a spanish-hungarian herritage, grew up in Austria and moved to Barcelona with 18. I can´t really say what country i call my home, because i love and respect every single place that untill now made me who I am.
I am a traveller, with a passion for photography and art, trying to capture things around me how I see them.
Growing up with the amazingly beautyful and sometimes shocking images of National Geographic I was motivated to start my photographical journey first in Austria, then Barcelona and hopefully soon around the world to make people realize that the world is a colourful, dangerous but inspiring place to be.
