Township Experience

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Friday, November 4, 2011 | 5 photos

I'm an ex stockbroker that discovered a my love for photography at 29 years old on a trip to Knysna in South Africa, this trip was particularly important to me because it was the first time I had traveled around my home country.

On my trip the most incredible thing for me was the one day we spent in a local township, we stumbled upon a Rastafarian settlement where orphans were taken in and raised as brothers and sisters. The entire time all I had to do was turn 90 degrees and I would get an incredible view of the lagoon, but for me the true story wasn't the obvious natural beauty of the landscape, but the less obvious beauty of the human spirit under the most unfortunate of circumstances.

Over the last year I have lost everything I had through the stock market, although a traumatic experience, it has finally freed me to pursue my true love of photography and story telling through pictures. My happiest moments are spent walking around with my camera and taking pictures of the world as only my eyes see it. I am a proud South African and would love to show the world what a beautiful place I live in, and hopefully draw attention to some of the issues facing the people of this stunning country.

I really would love to win this scholarship, as i really do believe it will help me create a career out of my passion. I am willing to climb mountains, swim with sharks, walk the wilderness and go wherever I need to go to get the image!

A friend asked me the other day "But what have you done in your life?" If I ever get asked that again I would like to say I traveled the world and I told the story of people who couldn't speak for themselves through my photo's.

Please help me make my dream come true
