Cajamarca

PERU | Monday, 14 August 2006 | Views [836]

I spent 3 days in the Northern Peruvian city of Cajamarca which was time well spent and enjoyed. The whole northern part of Peru is largely neglected by tourists, who usually seem to follow the gringo trail down south - Big mistake!

Cajamarca is a beautiful colonial city (Which in many ways I found more attractive than Cusco) with a lot of interesting history and a few pretty cool things to do. This is the city where Atahualpa was catured by Pizarro. You can visit the chamber where he was imprisoned and the hot srings where he was captured... The springs were an especially enjoyable experience - At a small cost, you can rent out your own private hot spring water spa where you can pass the afternoon. There are also numerous Inca sites in the area including "The Ventanillas de Otuzco" which are hundreds of little windows cut into the rock of the mountains which were used for burial.

I loved everything about this city... Had a very relaxing time!
