Life on the other side

I’ve always enjoyed looking at photographs, not so much at aesthetically beautiful ones, but those that touch me emotionally. Nothing is more fulfilling than capturing a special moment that I can connect with, to be able to re-live all the emotions behind the shot in time to come, to have others see what you saw and above all, feel what you felt when you took it.
Awhile back, I volunteered to help document an overseas trip by a non-profit organisation to an orphanage in a rural part of Indonesia. I was all ready to capture scenes of children in despair. I returned home with photographs, not of children in despair, but of children living in contentment, in appreciation of what little that they have. It made me realise how presumptuous I was and how little I know of the world around me, it opened my mind and made me want to see more, to shoot more and share what I’ve experienced with others.
Along my photography journey I realise there are things which I cannot learn on my own without proper guidance, this is the reason why I view this scholarship and the opportunity to learn from Jason as the single most important milestone in my pursuit to becoming a professional photographer.
