My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Cuba | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 4 photos
While some seek riches and fame, I seek experience and fulfilment. As a child, my budding wanderlust manifested itself though an ardent interest in the monthly arrival of that well known yellow-trimmed magazine. As I grew older, I also sought satisfaction by poring over various atlases and maps. Once ascended to my twenties, I had been on many family road trips, but had yet to venture off the continent. In 2003, I found myself in the fortunate circumstance of being unemployed. On a whim one evening, my fiancée and I decided to teach English in China. Three months later, most of our possessions sold, we headed to the Far East. That was it, I was hooked. I needed to see the rest of this big blue marble we call home. Subsequent trips have led me to all but three continents. My need to learn grew with every voyage, leading to night classes in photography and Spanish.
An adventurous nature, keen eye for composition, and fascination with foreign cultures coupled with multilingualism and passion for learning make me an ideal candidate for the recipient of this scholarship.
Included with this application are a few photos I feel help explain the state of disrepair, past political affiliations and ability to endure of the Cuban people. These three ideas are braided together throughout Cuba, and will surface their heads' wherever you look.
