A Vazaha in Vezo land

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Friday, October 28, 2011 | 4 photos

I have always had a passion for photography, I am no professional but I have a strong desire to learn and now my degree is over I am looking for a course or masters in photography. I hope photography and Zoology can go hand in hand in giving me the opportunity to travel the world experiencing and seeing things you otherwise would not see, and of course capturing each experience on photo to share with the rest of the world. Photos speak so loud and can bring out so many emotions in people, I would love to use this opportunity to gain lifetime skills so I can take a photo that could make someone fall in love with what seemed to be the most uncharismatic creature. Straight after graduation I was lucky enough to get an internship with WWF in Madagascar working in a small village in the southwest region. I fell so much in love with the place and the villagers and it soon became a home away from home. On one side there were sand dunes and on the other was the ocean. The people of the village are called Vezo, which means people who live off the ocean. There life is not an easy one as when the weather is bad they can not fish, and therefore they have no form of income or food. Yet there worries never showed and they continued to enjoy life....even the simple pleasures such as watching friends play a game of football whilst playing their’’ Kabosas. I saw men taking out their sons to teach them how to fish and beautiful women wearing yellow paint as the women back at home wear make up. But personally I think the paint is so much more authentic and stunning
