My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 5 photos

These photographs represent the people of Chiapas, one of the most compelling and fascinating regions of southern Mexico. Specifically, they depict scenes of every day life in San Cristobal de las Casas, a city located in the highlands of Chiapas. This colorful city is an important cultural and commercial centre and home to the Tzeltales and Tzotziles peoples, direct descendants of the Mayan culture. This is a short graphic narrative of my cultural heritage and the resilience of tradition in an area stroke by adversity for the last five centuries.

My passion for telling stories through images has nothing but grown ever since I held my first camera. Through the highs and lows of my life, pictures are the only way I can make sense of the world around me. I did not have the fortune of professionally develop as a photographer, but my passion and enthusiasm and are nothing short of that. The prospect of learning from such talented artist represents an unprecedented opportunity otherwise out of reach for someone as me. If chosen, rest assured that every instant of this exciting opportunity will be fully realized through my utter love of photography. I invite you to consider my application. Choosing these photographs would not only be a tremendous learning opportunity for myself but would also help showcase the beauty of my people and its diversity in the midst of political and economical unrest.
