My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My career as a pharmacist has not adequately allowed me to explore my passion for travel and people. Born in South Africa, raised in New Zealand and now living in Australia I have met people from all walks of life. I believe that the heartbeat of a place lies with its people and photography has helped me to capture this. My most treasured photos are taken when people are unaware, the image conveying a certain serenity and truthfulness as if there was a glitch in Neo’s matrix and I was there to capture it in all its fragility. I have been told that I look at the world through rose coloured glasses and in a way I believe this to be true. Beauty is abundant and can be found and captured even in the most dire circumstances. Ultimately I would use photography as tool to convey this to the skeptics in this world. My goal would be to raise an awareness of the social inequalities that exist today. I want to achieve this not by taking photographs of the poverty stricken but by capturing the raw love, hope and gratitude that exist in these nations. I have no doubt that with the help and direction of this scholarship I can be the voice of those people wishing to tell their story.
