My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
South Africa | Friday, January 11, 2013 | 5 photos
There are too many reasons for why I pick up a camera each day. I take pictures to express myself. I take pictures to create fabric in a world that too often appears black and white. To make peace with things that I cannot control. I take pictures to start a dialogue, to uncover and to meet my ghosts. I take pictures to remember, and sometimes to forget. I take pictures to form translations.Because it allows me to confront that which I don’t know. I take pictures because people need to see in order to believe. I embark on photography knowing I will always fail, because I can always do better.
It is that last statement that inspires me to continue in my practice. I feel that there are few things where the scope of growth is so endless. The series I submitted show this.
Visually I am obsessed with community living in South Africa, however this series took my eye away from the scenery and into the perspective of the local. Looking for something unexpected in an already different environment is what makes a travel piece a cut above the rest. And learning this through this series has really helped me excel. The desire to learn more is what makes me a suitable candidate to go to Oman.
