Entre los Dientes del Toro

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Thirteen years ago in May, I ripped open a birthday gift to find a present that changed my life forever. I had been meddling with my mother's Nikon SLR for several years, when she wasn't looking. My interest drove her to gift me my first camera, a black Canon AE-1P.

As a child, I was awed by National Geographic. My mom had it delivered monthly. I played "Indiana Jones" with my brother and sister, and told everyone I was going to be a Nat Geo photographer and an Archaeologist. Just as I turned 18, I went off on my first adventure, in an attempt to sate my wanderlust.

A double major in Anthropology and Computer Science, I consider Anthro my life study. I plan on pursuing a PhD in it. I cannot begin to put into words what drives the smoldering passion inside me to connect with people and cultures, and tell stories through my lens. I can only tell you that it consumes me.

As a recipient of this scholarship, I would be pouring the body of my skill, my education, and my soul into my assignment. I believe there is no higher offering. I hope I may use my experience to spread cultural acceptance, poverty awareness, and humanity- to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
