Day 21: Day Two of House Arrest

KENYA | Wednesday, 6 March 2013 | Views [194]

Today the girls and I took a matatu to the mzungu mall for the day.  We were permitted to leave the house because votes are still in the process of being counted. By tomorrow, however, the results should be released, making it very unsafe to be out and about. Although there are 8 candidates running, there are only 2 serious contenders: Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta. Odinga has already stipulated that, should he lose, he will not accept defeat. He also promised that the riots that would occur would be worse than last time, and his constituents are very much behind him. There have already been minor riots in Nairobi and Mombasa in the last 24 hours. Although where we are placed in Rongai is an area that strongly supports Kenyatta, it could be very dangerous if Odinga’s followers bring their violence to the area should he lose. We are all hoping that everything will be peaceful and that we will be able to return to the orphanage on Thursday, but at this point it seems like everything is all going to depend on the results.
