My first Sunday in Rongai, I decided to go hang out with the kid at the orphanage. I meant to work in the library a little bit, but it was very hot, and I took the opportunity to play with the kids instead. We played some football, which was really fun. They loved that I knew how to play, and that I could keep up. Have to admit, though, I got winded pretty quickly. There’s a lot of walking to be done here, but we don’t get a whole lot of exercise otherwise. When I was in Nairobi, it was particularly bad, seeing as I only had to walk 10 minutes to my placement and 15 minutes to the large mall where everyone went to get Wi-Fi. Here, I walk 35 minutes to the Special Needs home, and 45 minutes to the orphanage, both up a hill. I couldn’t go to the orphanage until 2, as religion is very ingrained in the culture here, and church services on Sunday typically go until 1:30 in the afternoon. It was great to spend part of my day with the kids before we go into lockdown for elections tomorrow.
