Sunday: the day of worship in Kenya. Most Kenyans go to church in the morning, and I was no different. The church that I went to was beautiful: very bright and open on the sides to allow for a cross-breeze. So many people came that some even had to be placed in the outdoor seating area, where they were able to see the service on a flat-screen TV. There were TVs in the church as well. Instead of providing books for the entire congregation, song lyrics were shown on multiple TVs, as well as were projected onto an enormous screen behind the lectern.
The church service lasted approximately an hour and a half. The first half an hour or so was filled with singing and dancing, so much so that I found myself out of breath! Announcements were then shown via the various media forms, before the preacher went into his sermon. He was very personable, and focused on peace, what with the upcoming Kenyan elections. When the service was over, I couldn’t believe how quickly it had gone, and how much more exciting it had been than at home. However, with all of the people in the church, it had gotten very hot, even with the lack of a few walls, and walking out into the open air was wonderful.
