My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - Journey in an Unknown Culture

Ah Praha!

What a delightful stone line place called Prague. I wasn’t sure what to expect or what to go see but in the end I spent more money then I anticipated while taking it all in. I stayed in the Prague Square Hostel, a prime location in the Old Town of Prague. This place was situated just around the corner from the old Astronomical Clock and Wenceslas Square.
In Praha, I took to the streets. Man, my feet have never felt the kind of soreness I felt from walking high and low in Prague. The city is divided in half by the Vltava River. Between the two sides, the must see attractions are the Prague Castle, the St. Vitus Cathedral, the Charles Bridge, The Astronomical clock and the countless Bohemian art museums. Some of the off the beaten path I went to were the Medieval Torture museums (gave me chills), the communism museum/ bunker (stepped into a page of history) and the Black light theater of Faust (not so good but there are many other plays with better story lines I’m sure).
After talking with other travelers from the hostel about things to do and see, I was drawn to the description of Kuntá Hora about 1 hour outside Prague. Kuntá Hora is known for the Sedlec Ossuary (bone church). The church was not made of bones but interiorly the remains from a once desirable burial site of 13th-14th century, which underwent mass grave unearthing. The bones were later arranged in the 1870s in various shapes. Some of the structural designs were bone hunts, chandlers, and 6 feet goblets. If you are a person whom is squeamish about being surrounded by ancient bones and skulls from 1300, definitely not the place to be. Yet, very cool to see.
Though there were tons of international food shops, it only made sense to me to experience the cuisine of the Czech Republic. What an explorationit was. My new found love for garlic in the form of Garlic soup or Cesneková. Oh, it was very strong but very tasty. At a difference restaurant, I ordered a more classic Czech dish of Duck, dumplings and red/ white cabbage. It was an extremely heavy meal. Even with my bottomless pit, I found it difficult to finish.
Historic Prague became most alive when walking down the street the sounds of Bach in the air from the walls of St, Martin Church (The oldest Church in Prague). I walked into a live classical music concert….Hearing Canon D completed by trip as a successful adventure in the Czech Republic.
