Battambang, Bamboo Railway

CAMBODIA | Thursday, 28 May 2009 | Views [933]

Today we survived the bamboo railway, basically a bamboo mat sat on top of a set of wheels, that hurtles down a rickety railway track, powered by a motorbike engine. Hilarious and fun once you get over the fear of derailing. Half way through the journey it poured down (proper rainy season rain!) and we were completely drenched. We looked like drowned rats when we arrived at the ''end of the line'' which was a little shack with a lovely old man who made us some delicious coffee, while we sat and watched his hens pecking around sheltering from the rain. It turned out he lived in London for 7 years, in Fulham! We didn't expect that.

On the journey back we nearly ran over a cow and a dog. Such a great experience and apparently soon to be banned so we were lucky to catch it before that happens.
