My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Australia | Thursday, November 3, 2011 | 4 photos

Narembeen, Australia is a small country town 300 kilometers east of Perth in an area known as the Wheatbelt. Of its 500 residents most are wheat and sheep farmers. I arrived here six weeks ago to work at the local roadhouse and the thing that struck me the moment I got out of the car was just how quiet it is here. There is a sense of solitude and peacefulness that cannot be found in a city. Just outside of town there are wheat fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. It is a feeling that really needs to be experienced to be understood. Yet, with this set of photos, I have tried to capture a sense of this tranquility, that quietness and the feeling of relaxation that only open space can provoke. The story of Narembeen and the reason why people would choose to live here, despite the lack of what some may consider necessities.

Just like every other aspiring 10-year-old photographer, I started out with snapshots of my cats and parents. Over the years I have grown into landscape and travel photography. I love capturing images that create an emotion in the viewer and have the power to transport them to another place. Quite like myself, the quiet observer, I am able to reach out and grasp a small piece of time and turn it into something that can be shared. Having the opportunity to work with a National Geographic photographer and learn techniques from the company famous around the world for its moving photography would be a huge honor. I know I still have things to learn and having the chance to work with Jason Edwards in South Africa would be a huge step in improving my own photography.
