Photography can best be described for me as an outward expression of inward development. I am constantly exercising my eye to see beyond the apparent, to dissipate the surface, to look deeper, more assiduously in uncovering the universal language of human expression. I photograph in order to understand others and ultimately to understand myself. To better apprehend this relationship, photographing the environment will expose the social elements that society is comprised of; the way we interact with nature, our spatial relationship to it and our socio-cultural relationships in it. I believe that in sharing this experience and travelling to South Africa I would benefit greatly form the situations that I would face, expanding my viewpoints on the global community and learning how to approach them.
The images I create are to convey my own emotional experiences to the viewer and to reveal and depict the common narrative of human experience, the reality that we all share.
Travelling to India in 2010, I was in pursuit of the unknown, it was an opportunity to grow beyond myself and all that I knew. I encountered people whose stories will eternally remain in my mind, their lives forever intertwined with my own. By taking a photograph I have preserved their essence, their reality over time.
I have lived my life rapidly proceeding from one thing to the other. While in India, the constraints of time concluded and all limitations loosened. I was able to assess and contemplate with a clear mind, to face things attentively and with honesty. This journey presented me with both mentally and physically exhausting experiences, the most challenging of which, was to face myself. My photographs are the manifestation of these feelings and encounters.
