New Time in Paradise

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

I have always thought of photography as a medium to get to know certain things around us, spaces between each other and a way to understand the process which, being in a new place, we make the strange into familiar and the exotic into usual and expected... An antropologic and sociologic tool.
The place I have visited to make this photos is a place where I used to spend time in summer when I was a child.15 years later I faced a totatly diferent reality: the new african emigrants on my home town, not having other spaces to take their families in sunday trips, adopted this space and claimed it.
While I was making the photographs I realised i was also understanding the sociologic situation in my home town, the portuguese people hadn't yet included the african foreigns and so, they made their one micro social enviroment to deal with the exclusion they are suffering off.
I am a photography student in Porto, Portugal, in the Faculty of Fine Arts, in the University of Porto, and I have lived also in Mexico and in Spain, and that made me to value the learning experiences other people can give us and to understand the influence that has in our future and our professional and personal lives.
