My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

I have a Bachelor of Music Performance with First Class Honours from Sydney Conservatorium of Music. I have always loved taking my own photographs but have never had the opportunity to learn about photography or had any professional experience. I believe that images can move people the way music can and that is a very powerful thing. This scholarship would be very valuable to me, as it would give me the unique opportunity to learn from a professional how to take the best quality photos possible, and in doing so to take photos with real emotional impact.

Every summer holidays since I was little, I have visited my cousins in Coffs Harbour. Under the same sun on the same beach, we played together on the sand, swam in the waves, climbed rocks and over time grew up and apart. These photos tell the story of that sun’s journey in one day. From the moments in very early morning where it is slowly rising, to twilight when it sinks back down and disappears as the moon takes its place. In a world where everything is changing and developing so fast, the simple beauty of one place that remains the same, is a great comfort. Seeing the endless cycle of day and night, of the sun always rising and setting on a new day, is a reminder of the world that exists outside of ourselves. Landscape photographs capture this notion so well and this is what I try to convey in my pictures. Travelling to Bhutan would be the ultimate fulfilment of this and for me in particular would be an experience to see and capture people and nature in a way I never thought I would.
