Río Sequito, the lost village

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Summer 2008. I got involved into a cooperation trip almost without noticing. My dad's cousin was going and he asked me to go. i did not doubt a second. Cuba was the destination and, even though i was only 20 years old I was dying to discover the island.
During our trip we went to several places: La Habana, Pinar del Río, Viñales, more or less all well knowns places. But we also visited a small village, a place with a few houses, a medical center, a cultural center and, of course, a school. People there had "nothing". Nothing seen from the occidental perspective. Nothing if we consider it from a material perspective. Maybe they did not have a camera, or fancy clothes (or what we call fancy, of course), they probably did not have cars, neither mobile phones. But...do they need them? No. Because they were happy there, and as far as I know, they still are. Because they have a good medical service, they have a way to have fun, they have a school, an education, and they have each other.

My name is Carla Llamas, I am a journalist and in february i will start my masters degree on travelling journalism. My experience in this field comes from my own trips all around Europe thanks to my youth association, which organizes youth exchanges under the Youth in Action programme. A part from that, I went to the Tahina-Can expedition in Chile, a travelling journalism trip for students.
Besides, I feel the need to travel and comunicate what i live and experience in the new places i visit. I am very active, openminded and talkative, I enjoy meeting new people and sharing my beliefs and my points of view.
My wish is to keep improving my skills in the travelling journalism field and make of this, in case i get it, a great and unforgetable experience to communicate to everyone.
