Beijing Day 4

CHINA | Friday, 24 October 2008 | Views [281]

We took our time getting going this morning.  I organized and packed up my bag, while Meredith wrote in our daily journal.  After getting cleaned up we headed to the only working Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing.

The Yonghe Temple was founded in 1722 by the Chinese Emperor Yongzheng.  There is an 18 meter tall Maitreya Buddha that was carved out of a single piece of white sandalwood. The buildings were very colourful and filled with beautiful statues and intricate silk artwork.  There is an amazing sand design that you have to see to believe.

In the afternoon we headed to the Olympic Sport Center.  The Bird's Nest is very cool, but the whole area lacks the buzz of athletes. It must have been very impressive during the Games.

Tonight we are headed to see a Kung Fu show.  I hope we'll survive to write about it.
