Faces of Chandni Chowk

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

India | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

My entry titled “Faces of Chandni Chowk” gives a glimpse of the daily workers of Chandni Chowk an ancient market in Delhi, India. Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest markets of Delhi. Trading of almost all goods in wholesale worth millions is done here. Despite this fact the average income of workers here is even less than $1 per day.
The photograph “Chandni Chowk” tries to imbibe the fact that though Delhi has developed a lot and emerged as a great host of the recent Commonwealth Games, the life of this rickshaw puller & others like him is still full of hardships.
“Dark and Light” is a portrait of a daily worker searching for light in the darkness.
“On Road Salon” shows a man getting bald on the street. These workers eat, sleep, and live on the streets of Chandni Chowk.
Despite of such low income of these workers, Chandni Chowk is still full of religion and devotion. “Beyond Hope Lies Faith” tries to portray this faith. It’s an idol of “Lord Shani” which is placed on various streets on Saturday and people donate money. “Blue and Red” portrays that these workers also get involved in leisure like smoking.
I chose Chandni Chowk to showcase the life and hardships associated in the life of these workers & make the community aware of them.
I should be chosen for the scholarship as I feel I have a creative eye and I observe things very carefully. I wish to portray stories and people never explored and territories never encroached upon and bring it to the lieu of the world. At the same time I wish to improvise my creative thoughts and learn more and get better by doing mistakes and learning from them.
