Many people my age are timid to travel to S.E. Asia.  I've been there twice for extended backpacking trips: 1975 (on the hippie trail) and wintered there in 2011 (didn't get ill).  I've made it a mission to encourage middle-agers to be daring, be different, and visit Asia instead of taking cruises. I enjoy the Asian people, understanding how their lives revolve around Buddhism. A hotel/guest house is only for sleeping as there are many sights and sounds and eats to see.  I fear no street food or 'squatters.' I live to explore back alleys and riverfronts.  Last year I was pleased to discover the Asian people were as as welcoming to foreigners as they were 30 years ago.  Being a writer, I love the intricacies of language, how one word can change things.  My websitehas a few pix of signs in SE Asia you'll find humorous.

I survived the 1979 revolution in Grenada and almost took a pic of Maurice Bishop aka the revolutuion's leader.   I stayed at an all inclusive resort in Cuba but had to get out and escaped by bus to Havana.  There's some great music in bars and clubs in Varadero but the package people are too lazy to leave their resorts.  Met my wife-to-be on a frieghter in the Java Sea.

The Mekong Express in Cambodia rocks.

The night bus in Vietnam does not.

Mexicans are great cooks.

I've had my haircut in Java, Australia, San Francisco Chinatown, Isla Mujeres (the best), and Vietnam (cross-eyed barber who also cleaned my ears).
