My Scholarship entry - Caledonian dreaming

I was born and raised in rural Lincolnshire in the UK, far from the glitz of LA, the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and the serenity of the Scandinavian fjords. Yet, I have always yearned to travel to far-flung lands, to experience different cultures and ancient rituals. As a child, I remember my mother saying to me "on special occasions, I take a moment to bottle my memories. I remember everything: how it tastes, how it sounds, how it felt, because no-one can ever take those away from you". From that day on I vowed to try and do this, so this is what photography means to me. Every image is a cherished memory. It is the taste of the salty sea breeze on my lips, the sound of my nieces playing happily in the park, the elation at finally graduating, and the sadness of saying goodbye. I am now 27, so I own an enviable collection of them. My job as a marine biologist has enabled me to visit uninhabited islands atolls, travel through sprawling cities in South-East Asia, visit the second deepest point in the world's oceans and swim the length of the Great Barrier Reef. Yet, number one on my list of things-to-do-before-i-die; visiting and photographing Machu Picchu sadly remains outstanding.
