2011 photo scholarship

Strength and survival.

Australia | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

My photos were taken in the city of Brisbane and they tell the story of a young man and young woman, separated by their socioeconomic status, yet sharing the common area of nature.

The photographer I want to be is one who captures a moment, not the photographer who creates one. I want to be able to catch that split second in time, that fleeting moment, and enabling it to live forever. No matter how dynamic an image is, once caught by the lens, it is frozen in time and able to be shared with the rest of the world, rather than kept secret, where only the photographer is privy to its beauty. The photographic style I have been cultivating is inspired by photojournalism. I like to use my 200mm, stand back from the crowd, away from the action and capture the essence of what is happening in front of me. Having said that, I’m not scared of moving in with my 35mm in order ‘get my shot’. For many years I shot on Auto using first my film, then digital SLR. I eventually did a short photography course and followed that up with a Cert IV in photo-imaging. Even so I’m still very aware of how much I need to learn, as well as how much I want to learn. I do want to learn so much more. I am an excellent listener, a keen questioner, I take instruction well and am also able to take the initiative. The idea of a challenge inspires me; the photographic challenge, as well the personal challenge of travelling overseas and putting myself outside of my comfort zone.
