Discovering the term "Experience"

My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

I had no idea what to expect but as soon as I stepped onto the tarmac in Chiang Mai, I suddenly felt like I had entered another realm of existence.
I organised a hike in Chiang Mai and meet Om, he was middle-aged fit looking man with long thin hair past his shoulders and an easy face. We stopped to have our “jungle lunch” as Om called it next to a small flowing river. He explained to me that the water flows so easily because it accepts change, when a rock blocks the waters path, it simply changes its direction and flows around the rock. This made me think, perhaps when life throughs us a curveball, rather than wasting energy on what I can’t change, maybe I should focus on what I can change.
As we were winding down our day Om invited us all back to his favourite bar in Chiang Mai, THC Rooftop bar for a final farewell drink. Now this place was a awesome, as we climbed a few sets of metal stairs with plenty of Bob Marley wall murals to keep the eyes entertained. We came to what seemed like a small metal ladder leading up to the bar where of course in traditional Thai accustoms, you needed to take your shoes off. So I claimed the ladder barefoot and reached the top where the floor lay covered in bamboo mats. There were cushions everywhere with reggae music comprising of a relaxed and chilled vibe. As we sat around sharing our storys I asked Om, “Are you working tomorrow?”. He looked over at me and said “Don’t know, tomorrow not here yet, I found out then if I work”. “So you have no idea if you are working tomorrow?”, again he answered “I don’t worry about tomorrow yet. I worry about right now, tomorrow not exist yet, when I wake up tomorrow, then I see if I work”.
Living your life only based on this moment, it dawned on me.
People seem to be more present when they travel, totally committed to the experience they are having without weighing up the past or considering the future. Maybe thats why travelling is so addictive? A taste of pure experience.
