My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Bulgaria | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

I am an 18-year-old student from Bulgaria - a small poorly developed country in Eastern Europe. I was born and brought up here and hardly ever left this godforsaken place. However, despite not having the opportunity to travel around the world, journeys and exploring new places have always been a big passion of mine. When I saw the ad about the scholarship, I immediately knew I had to participate - visiting Africa is one of my biggest lifetime dreams. I know there are thousands of people with way better photography skills than mine, but I want this scholarship from the bottom of my heart. So I said to myself "Why not?".
Art, in all of its forms, is what I live for. I am engaged mostly in fine arts and design, but I'm also very passionate for photography as my hobby. Unfortunately, I can't afford a camera of good quality, so I'm content with an average digital camera.
Bulgaria has an extremely vivid history and traditions, magnificent nature and architecture, but in these photos I tried to capture the heart of Bulgarian everyday city life. It is not shiny and glamorous, nor exceptionally interesting. It doesn't have the elegance of France, the exotic character of Brazil or the American superiority, but I still find it pretty and charming. I think photography is about seizing the beauty of every single thing in this enormous chaotic world we live in, and this exactly is what my photos represent - the hard-to-notice beauty of the life, surrounding us. On surface, these streets I cross everyday are grey, these people I walk by seem cold and unfriendly, but looking in their eyes, I see humanity. I hope, my pictures allow the watcher to see it too.
