My Photo scholarship 2011 entry
Sri Lanka | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos
The photos what I have submitted were taken at the Nallur temple festival during my recent visit to Jaffna, the northern city of Sri Lanka. Jaffna was a city, which was severely affected during the civil war that was happened for nearly 30 years. Many people had to leave Jaffna and settle in some other places to save their lives. However, today after years now the city is opened to everyone. Not only Hindus but also the people belong to other communities visit Jaffna with much love. It’s a city of rich cultural heritage and spiritual deities. In August 2011 many gathered to Nallur temple to celebrate the annual festival for God Muruga. People belong to many communities, casts, social classes and cultures got together with similar emotions in their hearts. My attempt was to capture the actions of different devotees and their moods during the festival.
I am Buddhini. I always had the passion of telling stories through my pictures. What I had was just an auto focusing camera and it was only last year that I was finally able to buy my first DSLR camera. I am a newbie to photography and this is the first time I am submitting photographs for a competition like this. For me there is lot to learn. I am applying for this scholarship because I think this would be a good learning opportunity to sharpen my experience and knowledge on photography. I want to develop my skills on telling stories through images. If I would be chosen for the scholarship, I will do my best to make use of every moment, to learn from the mentor and come up with few good pictures. … few pictures that would tell thousands of words to the world. Thank you.
