My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry

For the first five summers of my life, my family and I trekked the National Scenic Continental Divide Trail with llamas. We traversed 3,100-miles along the backbone of the continent from Canada to Mexico. After finishing the trail we headed back to life in the east, but as I grew up I didn’t lose my sense of adventure.
My family not only lives outside of the box; we live in a forest in a log home my parents built from scratch. There, I began homeschooling in seventh grade and used the entire world as my classroom. Ever since birth I have been hurtling around the world on a roller-coaster ride, visiting fourteen countries on four continents. Wherever I travel, I keep a journal illustrating the happenings along the way and recording my adventures. In their pages, one can hear the thunder of avalanches in Patagonia, smell the rank stench of Moroccan tanneries, and feel the heat of lava drooling into the ocean from Hawaii. The same work I do in my journals I want to do for the rest of my life. I want to take the magic of the world and reveal it through my writing, illustration, and photography.
