My Scholarship entry - Peruvian Hearing Mission

In September of 2014 I travelled to Peru to shoot a music video for the artist Matt Nathanson. the purpose of the trip was to join the Starkey Hearing Foundation to help give hearing aids to hearing disabled people who couldn’t otherwise afford or reach the help they deserved. There was such passion, heartache, hope and life inside the face of every person and the landscapes that surrounded them so I decided to document the process with portraits and landscape photography.
In 48 hours we helped fit over 1,000 people with hearing aids — many of whom had never heard in their entire lives. There were some amazingly powerful moments that went photographed and documented on film, but I wanted to capture the spirit and life beyond the pain. These people live in a beautiful place and have such amazing outlooks on their lives, despite being a poor country and having disabilities.
It was truly inspiring to be here and see the affect such acts of kindness can have on other people and the compassion humans can have for one another in a world where that’s not so commonplace.
