a summer camp like no other

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

This summer, I worked at Double H Ranch in upstate New York. Double H is part of the Hole in the Wall foundation; providing specialised programs for children with life-threatening and critical illnesses, giving them an opportunity to go to summer camp, allowing them to be regular kids. Through this series of photos, I attempted to just begin to show people the magic that happens in this reclaimed dude ranch in the midst of the Adirondacks, to introduce them to a fraction of the resilience, courage and love of life of some of the incredible kids I got to meet.
A recent graduate of psychology, I am still trying to fund my first photography class. I discovered the wonders of photography not even a year ago, from my mother on one of many trips abroad. Visiting over 17countries in 21years, I count myself as extremely fortunate. My only regret is not having had the presence of mind to discover photography earlier and snap images of the kaleidoscopic markets of Thailand or the tranquillity of Greek villages as a toddler.
I believe in my aptitude in capturing moments, but I still have a lot to learn. My main interest lies in travel photography; I want to show people a different world to the one they know. I want to introduce them to issues and stories outside of their everyday lives. I want to learn to look at people, see the cracks in their cheeks and the light in their eyes and take photographs that show who they are, where they’re from and all they’ve done. To work with Jason Edwards would be a mind-blowing opportunity, and I truly think I can benefit from the scholarship and give it the enthusiasm, energy, open-mindedness and creativity that I apply to everything I do.
