CHINA 3 Months In China, March-June 2008

First Gun / First Bust

CHINA | Friday, 9 May 2008 | Views [377]

After 6 weeks in China I finally saw the first gun of any type.  It was held by a Brinks-type worker and didn't even look like a real gun.  It looked more like an airgun.  But I don't know guns.  Maybe all they have to worry about is temporarily incapacitating a knife-wielder.

A few nights ago I came across what looked like a major bust in progress.  Eight cops, a car with all its doors and hood open.  But no guns anywhere.  After a while everything fizzled out and the crowd dispersed.  So I have still not seen an arrest; nor police brutality; nor police bullyism; nor police disrespecting anybody; nor anybody disrespecting police.  The people in uniform in China are gentle, courteous and restrained.  I trust them more than American police, who are trained to trick people into giving up their rights, and who are so accustomed to committing perjury that they consider it their right to do so "as needed."
