Arriving at the Tel Aviv airport this summer marked the beginning of a lifelong dream of mine. I could not believe I was actually in Israel. Actually, I must admit that I was a bit disappointed at first. You see, I had just arrived at one of the most modern airports in the world, in the middle of a city that looked just like many other European cities I have been to over the years. That disappointment quickly reversed itself, however, as I got in the taxi and could see the valleys below, and the rich history that I knew was going to be awaiting me every step I took on this trip. That first night I remember going to sleep thinking how fortunate I was actually to be here. I mean, the weather might be frightfully hot, but starting tomorrow I am actually going to see buildings and structures that were around at the time of Christ. That is pretty mind-boggling when you think about it.
The next few days I spent exploring the area around Tel Aviv, which is an adventure in and of itself. This is a major city right in the heart of the Middle East. The modern features are apparent everywhere you go, and your mind races to the reality that at the same time, you are in the middle of one of the most historic nations on earth. I saw things that were literally mindboggling. It was interesting to spend those first few days listening to the people around me and gaining a perspective of what life is like here. I learned quickly that life is difficult, and people are on edge, yet they are passionate about their homeland. That was special. As I began to venture out of the city, I saw farmers that were tilling fields that had been in their families for generations. I also shopped in historic districts of Jerusalem that offered me not only a great history lesson but also many beautiful souvenirs at the same time. This is a summer that I will certainly not forget anytime soon
