My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Vietnam | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

It should have been different for me, because many people from the American Midwest do not often venture beyond their states, let alone their countries, but from the time they started their family, my parents saved to take us to Europe. When I was fifteen, they succeeded, and I went abroad and fell in love with travel.
I’m driven to use my camera to combat the apathy towards international travel that many Americans face. When I capture an image, I hope that it may reach a person who needs a nudge out of the door on their own journey, wherever it may lead. It is my goal to use photography to communicate to Americans in particular that traveling is not something to approach with fear, but with celebration!
On that first trip to Europe I carried a disposable camera. The photos it produced are precious to me. They remind me of a time when I could not simply hit delete and capture an image again; when photography was a fascination with a moment that I dared not simply leave to memory. For me, this scholarship presents the opportunity to return to that kind of photography. If given the chance to learn from you, I would be thrilled to watch my skill set redevelop under your guidance.
