Being Here Is Not A Choice

PHILIPPINES | Wednesday, 14 May 2014 | Views [249] | Scholarship Entry

Wouldn't it have been crazy if we were born into our dream places? Forget the people we were born to and instead, focus on the places where we were born into. Wouldn't that have presented better opportunities for us to know ourselves? I guess we will never know. In hindsight, I guess it is also better this way.

Being born in the Philippines is a no-brainer for me. Both of my parents are Filipinos and that's just the way it is ever since. I have no qualms being one because, seriously, you don't get to choose your race and fortunately, I have pretty good memories of the place where I was destined to enter when I came into this world.

One thing that I really love about my country is the sunshine. I know, I know. What's the big deal about sunshine anyways? Well, I tell you. Sunshine is for me the epitome of hope and happiness, and that everything, no matter how messed up, will always feel a tad better with even just a little sunshine thrown in.

Second is the breathtaking sunsets. There are probably a million other beautiful sunsets in the world but for me, sunsets in the Philippine sky is one of a kind - sunsets against a blood-red sky, sunsets against the fading gold of the sun, sunsets against a slowly disappearing horizon as the darkness slowly make its way in. They're the sunsets of my home and it's beauty will always hold for me a different kind of high.

Lastly, the beaches - salt in the air, sand in my hair. With my love for sunshine and sunsets, I guess it is only to be expected that I would list the beaches as the last. So how would I describe them? Stunning. Ethereal. Heartbreaking. Stunning because their beauty is simply breathtaking, ethereal because the place itself is touched by a grace and simplicity that is definitely beyond man's capabilities, and heartbreaking because in a way, its serenity makes you see the world as it truly is - ever changing.

So yes, how did I end up here? I have no idea. Someone out there probably knows how much I needed the sunshine, the sunsets, and the beaches in my life that he decided to put me here out of all the places in the world - a gift I will always be grateful for no matter where life may take me someday.
