Afro Cuban Life

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | 5 photos

I have found in traveling that my view of the world and its view of me are very rarely the same- not even parallel in many instances. But many times that is once my nationality has been established- more often than not in places where the people are of color I am accepted as a local. This was my experience during a cultural exchange program to Cuba. Here I was able to take photos of daily Afro Cuban life and given a unique perspective as to what it is to be Black in Cuba. That experience and those that I had traveling as a Black American woman in India and Vietnam caused me to want to document this unique perspective and place as a "World Nomad". In wanting to share the experiences and views of Black and female travelers like myself I created Black Diaspora Travels. BDT is developing as a website and blog with the ultimate goal of making it a series. In being selected as the South Africa Scholarship recipient I would not only make a my dream of being a travel photographer a reality I would expand upon the vision of National Geographic/World Nomad and my mentor.
