My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - My Big Adventure

Traveling is always a great pleasure for me. In fact, I keep saying this to people around me. I always enjoy traveling, even to strange places where many people might never travel before. To me, having a vacation is worth in itself.
In 2009, my friends and I came up with an idea to visit Sempu Island. This island is well known for its natural beauty. The warm and glittering look of white sands along the Coast of Sempu Island is pretty much the same with that in Long Beach. In the middle of the island, there is a lagoon called Segoro Anakan; meanwhile, in the east there are fresh water lakes with unique white catfish, Telaga Lele and Telaga Sat. At that time, we agreed to camp, and I became the leader of the team. Because of our limited time, I managed to arrange the shortest schedule and the route. With minimum budget, we planned to stay for 2 days 1 night for this adventure. For that reason, we decided to ride to go in fishermen’s pick-up car from Malang city to Sendang Biru, the port to reach Sempu Island.
Having got to Sendang Biru, we immediately reported our plan to camp to the post guard and rent a ship from local fishermen for the next afternoon. We were very excited as we stepped on our feet on Sempu Island. Then, we continued passing through the forest to Segara Anakan which was located in the middle of the island.
The wet paths in the island once led us to an unknown swampy place, and we lost our ways for a couple of hours. The falling trees here and there made our journey more and more difficult than before. Some of us looked frightened. But, I encouraged them not to fear. This was a crucial situation where everyone was easily to blame one to another. Instead, we had to use logic more than emotion.
Finally, we decided not to visit Segoro Anakan because of our short time. Nevertheless, we were still happy because we could enjoy the beauty of Telaga Lele Lake and the sunrise at Teluk Waru –waru. This trip has offered great lessons to us about life: both how Indonesia turns out to be blessed rich country with natural beauty but also how we live with other people. Life is a journey not destination.
