Understanding a Culture through Food - LOCAL AND FOOD

INDONESIA | Friday, 19 April 2013 | Views [288] | Scholarship Entry

Who doesn’t love great food?
I live in Indonesia, a country with many cultures on each province. Every place has its unique identity of food. For example, Bugis people who live in Manado, North Sulawesi love spicy food, but Javanese love sweet taste of food. Padang people, on the other hand, love meat mix with strong spicy seasoning, while Sunda people love salty-cooked fish.
Wherever I go to somewhere I never been before, I love to experience new taste of local food. It’s surprising me, sometimes. How a quite place could have an extraordinary food. Every food has its own uniqueness.
Local culture can be understood by its food. Warmth and kindness is reflected by their special dishes. Those local people will do their best to serve special dish, that’s why they put their heart on it. Once you taste those foods, you will never forget how they’ve worked harder to serve it for you.
I once visited Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This place is famous by Javanese culture and traditions. Near Sultan Palace, there is a little restaurant, hidden by big hotels surrounding it. I never expected to find such a delicious food there. I was hungry, and just step into the nearest and cheapest restaurant, because it was the last day of my holiday and I ran out of money.
I ate Gudeg. It is traditional food from Yogyakarta. It is made from uncooked jackfruit. With special seasoning you’ll never find in anywhere else in the world, it creates a tasteful dish. Serve with hot rice, it’s the best mate for Gudeg.
I remember the old woman who ran that restaurant. Her smile and kindness, make us, the guests, fell comfortable. Like mommy who cooks for her children, she cooked Gudeg for us. She smiled while cooking, and finally served it for us.
